Language Levels according to CEFR explainedWhich level am I at?

The Spanish Courses at Instituto de Idiomas Ibiza follow the Common European Framework for languages (CEFR). You can use the Can Do Statements below correspondig to each level to track your progress. Together with the Level Test and the Can Do Statements below you can decide which level you are at right now and then you can choose the relevante course we offer you.

A0 - You are an absolute beginner if you ...

have absolutely no knowlegde of Spanish. You can´t count to five and also not greet a person. You will have to take a beginners course.

A1 - You are on a basic level if you can ...
  • understand and use familiar expressions and very basic phrases aimed at meeting your everyday needs,
  • introduce yourself to others and can ask,
  • order basic food and drink,
  • answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know and things you have
  • and interact in a simple way if the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Depending on your exact level according to the level test, you would be placed either in a course A1.1. or A1.2 or if you can do all of the above you can move on to level A2.

A2- You are on elementary level if you can ...
  • understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance like very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography and employment,
  • communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters,
  • describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Depending on your exact level according to the level test, you would be placed either in a course A2.1., A2.2 or A2.3. If you can do all of the above you can move on to level B1.

B1 - You are on an intermediate level if you can ...
  • understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.,
  • deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken,
  • produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest,
  • describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Depending on your exact level according to the level test, you would be placed either in a course B.1.1, B1.2 or B1.3. If you can do all of the above you can move on to level B1.

B2 - You are on an upper intermediate level if you can ...
  • understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialisation,
  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party,
  • produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Depending on your exact level according to the level test, you would be placed either in a course B2.1, B2.2, B2.3., B2.4 or B2.5. If you can do all of the above you can move on to level C1.

C1 - You are on an advanced level if you can ...
  • understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning,
  • express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions,
  • use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes,
  • produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Depending on your exact level according to the level test, you would be placed either in a C1 class or if you can do all of the above you can move on to level C2.

C2 - You are on a proficiency level if you can ...
  • understand with ease virtually everything heard or read
  • summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation
  • express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning, even in the most complex situations

Our Spanish courses will provide you the basis for succcesful learning. Below you will find our course outlines for all our Spanish courses structured according to the levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

As you will be studying in a school accredited by Instituto Cervantes you will be learning according to the syllabus of the Instituto Cervantes. No matter if you take an intensive course in Ibiza, evening classes, online classes or any other course format we offer.

How much of the course outline will be covered in your course, depends on the duration and the intensity of your course. It shows you what you learn on each level and gives you an idea how the different levels of A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 are structured.

It is like a class outside the classroom where you will experience how to use the Spanish langugae at the food market, at the café or when meeting people.
